2017 Webinar Series -“Volunteer Management in Sports & Events from research to teaching”

During the webinar, we will explore the theory and practice of managing volunteer labour in the sport/event industry. We will provide research and insights to learn about the nature and scope of volunteering and how this can be applied in a teaching environment.  In particular we aim to provide an understanding of the practical implications, case studies and challenges that you may face when delivering volunteer management subjects.

This webinar will be presented by:

Professor Karen Smith

Karen is a Professor in Tourism Management at Victoria University of Wellington. Much of her research concerns volunteers and their management in the tourism and events sectors, and more broadly in non-profit organisations in areas as diverse as sport, health, emergency management, and conservation. She is interested in why and how people give time to support a range of causes, and how organisations respond to and maximise the impact of these donations of time.

Specific areas of research interest include event volunteering, recruitment and selection of volunteers, the career paths and professional development of managers of volunteers, and approaches to valuing volunteers. She delivers professional development and training for non-profit organisations, and is currently Chair of Volunteering New Zealand.
