Purpose

The purpose of the SMAANZ Three-Minute Thesis Award (SMAANZ 3MT) is to encourage and support the development of the next generation of scholars in the field of sport management. The SMAANZ 3MT is open to all SMAANZ student members. It provides financial support to attend an SMAANZ conference through an annual competitive award. The award is aimed at research-based honours, master's, and doctoral degree candidates (full-time or part-time) who have completed or are completing the research component of their degree in sport management. 

  1. Encourage scholarly inquiry in sport management;
  2. Provide a forum to present and communicate results of sport management-related research; and
  3. Enhance the application of management theory to the sports context.

Eligibility

  • An applicant’s research must be in the area of sport management.
  • An applicant must be currently enrolled or have completed an Honours, Masters or Doctoral (e.g., PhD, EdD, DBA, or equivalent) degree program by research or by coursework with a research component equivalent to at least 50% of the program.
  • For PhD candidates, if completed, the applicant’s degree conferral must not be more than 3 months prior to the award closing date.
  • An applicant must not have previously received the award.

Deliverables

The SMAANZ 3MT Award is a two-stage, three-minute thesis competition. Applicants must submit a three-minute thesis (3MT)- style presentation summarising their research in the pre-recorded MP4 format.

The SMAANZ 3MT Award Committee will recommend three finalists to deliver their 3MT presentation in a live format at the SMAANZ Conference

The requirements/specifications for this submission are as follows:

  • Presentations are limited to three minutes, and submissions exceeding three minutes will not be considered.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter begins speaking.
  • Videos must meet the following criteria:
    • Filmed in horizontal (landscape) format.
    • Filmed on a plain background.
    • Filmed from a static position.
    • Filmed from one camera angle.
  • A single static slide is permitted in the presentation (no slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ of any description). This can be visible continuously, or ‘cut to’ (as many times as you like)
  • The three-minute audio must be continuous – no sound edits or breaks.
  • No additional props (e.g., costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment, or animated backgrounds) are permitted in the recording.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g., no poems, raps or songs).
  • No additional electronic media (e.g., sound and video files) are permitted within the video recording.

Please note: Submissions will not be judged on video/ recording quality or editing capabilities (optional inclusions). Judging will focus on the presentation, ability to communicate research to a non-specialist audience, and the PowerPoint slide.

In addition, applicants need to provide:

  • A brief statement from their primary thesis supervisor, directed to the SRA Award Chair (email is acceptable), confirming that the student meets all eligibility requirements for the award.

Application Procedure

  • All applications must be submitted via the "Apply Now" button above.
  • The SMAANZ 3MT Award Committee, chaired by a SMAANZ Board member, will review all submissions alongside a panel of two other reviewers, who will recommend three finalists to deliver their presentations at the SMAANZ Conference.
  • The three finalists will then be judged at the conference by the same panel of three judges based on their presentation delivery during the session.
  • The conferral of the award is dependent on the quality of submissions, and thus, the Award Committee/Board reserves the right not to choose any finalists in a given year in advance of the conference

Conditions of the Award

  • The three finalists will deliver their presentations at the SMAANZ Conference, within a session dedicated exclusively to this award.
  • The winner is also expected to prepare a synopsis of their research for the SMAANZ Newsletter or associated communication.
  • The award will consist of (AUD)$500 and a certificate presented during the conference.
  • All finalists will have their conference registration paid for to attend the conference and present.
